“New” Collaborative Learning Environments
The Convergence of Hermeneutics and Hypertext

Chapter in Jack High (ed.) Humane Economics: Essays in Honor of Don Lavoie (Aldershot, UK: Edward Elgar Publishing, 2006).

Abstract

Don Lavoie was a great man, a brilliant scholar, a wonderful teacher, a true mentor and a good friend. He was also a committed hermeneuticist; often championing the philosophy of Gadamer in person and in print. This interest in hermeneutics, I contend, lead to his studying social and organizational learning and fueled his enthusiasm for hypertext. Unfortunately, Lavoie did not get an opportunity to explore these linkages. Section II, thus, offers an account of how Lavoie’s hermeneutics might have informed his understanding of hypertext, arguing that it is those elements of traditional reading and writing that hypertext retains and extends that make it effective as a medium for collaborative learning. Section III, then, explores the potential of hypertext to aid learning in the classroom.
